Today,
let's take a look at how to find proven markets - groups
of people who want to buy products from you - people
who want to spend money on good products and services.
Smart
marketers pick a target market first, and then
find or develop products and services that will appeal
to this special market - once they know there's a need
for them.
Read
that again.
This
is a critical step. If you target a bad market, you'll
go broke. Pick a good one, and you have a gold mine waiting
to be tapped.
You
see, when you target a good, proven market you won't have
to do much selling to convince your prospects to buy.
All you need to do is offer the solutions they want, present
them in a good way, and they will buy.
That's
smart marketing.
So, what constitutes a good market,
and how can you find one?
Well, one of the easiest ways to go is to target an area
where there are already lots of products being sold. An
area with a lot of "competition".
But
here's the key: Instead of the word "competition",
think "potential business partners".
One
general rule of direct marketing is this:
-
Introducing
proven products to a proven market is easy.
-
Introducing
proven products to a new market means taking a risk.
-
Introducing
new products to a brand new market is very risky.
You
see, if there are a lot of products being sold to your
market online, you have proof that it works. All you need
to do is make your offer unique - and position it correctly.
No
matter what you might think, competition is a GOOD thing
to have. Seriously, it proves that there is a large interest
in what you have to offer and it gives you tons of people
to set up profitable win-win joint venture deals with
later on.
Of
course, it's never a good idea to try to sell the exact
same products everyone else is selling.
Instead,
what you want to do is check that there is a massive demand
for your information, and that people are actually buying
products online. After that, coming up with winning product
ideas is easy.
To
sum it up: Direct competition is bad. Complementary
products are great.
Proven
Buying Patterns
& The Ideal Customer
Generally speaking, when you are dealing with direct marketing
and information products, the ideal customer is
-
Someone
who has a lot of money to spend, and don't mind doing
so.
-
Someone
who has previously bought products similar to what you
will be selling.
-
Someone
who is easy to locate and reach on the Internet.
-
Someone
who is comfortable buying products in your price range.
In
other words, you want to isolate a group of people with
a proven buying pattern. And you want them to be easy
to reach online.
It's
extremely important that the people you are planning
to help have money and are willing to pay for solutions
to their problems. Trying to sell your products to people
who cannot afford them is not a good idea... You'll
go broke yourself.
While
we're talking about buying patterns, there is one thing
you should know about human behavior:
The
perfect prospect is a person who has a history of buying
a lot of related products. The more products a person
in a chosen field has bought, and the more frequently,
the more likely he is to buy another one.
This
tells us one thing: by picking an area where there are
lots of products being sold, you can easily find paying
customers. That's what you're after.
Finding
YOUR perfect target market:
How to work with something you love
Now that you know what constitutes a profitable market,
let's take a look at how to find one that appeals specifically
to you.
Generally,
I have two rules when it comes to choosing a topic to
work with:
-
It
must be something that you WANT to work with.
-
It must be something that offers a large profit potential.
Now,
you can generate money by selling stuff that doesn't
interest you, but it's not a good way to go. If you are
passionate about your subject, you'll enjoy the process
a lot more.
Remember,
the whole point of having your own Internet business is
freedom. The freedom of being able to make as much
money as you want AND being able to work with something
you love, on your own terms.
It
all starts with picking an area you are passionate about.
Actually,
choosing your market can be the most important business
decision you'll ever make. This is where many people get
stuck, or make bad strategic decisions that will make
it impossible for them to succeed.
So
let's make sure you get it right the first time...
List
your passions, interests and hobbies and pick a subject
that you would like to work with. Don't think about products
right now. Think about what interests you. Think about
what you love doing. Think about what you love reading
about in your spare time.
Then,
once you find a topic you like, simply do some research
to verify that it has profit potential. If there are related
products being sold, it's time to get moving.
Putting
it all together
Have you found a good topic to work with? Then it's time
for the next step...
Basically,
there are two different ways to go:
-
Target
a large, popular market where there are lots of products
being sold, lots of existing customers, and massive
profit potential.
-
Target a specialized, narrow niche where you can easily
dominate the market and quickly become a leading authority
on your subject.
As
long as you can find a group of people with common problems
and goals who are willing to pay for solutions, you have
a promising market on your hands.
You
might want to go for a VERY specialized topic that interests
you, one where you have a lot more experience than the
average guy. If you are able to find one, great. Any field
where you can help a clearly defined group of people solve
their specific problems can be a gold mine.
The
important thing is that your market is easy to reach online,
that they have money to spend, and that there are currently
related products being sold on the Internet.
If
you have those points covered, you'll do fine.
And
listen, you don't have to be THE expert in your area -
as long as you have a great interest and know more than
"most" of your prospects, you'll be able to
create a winner. This may mean that you have to do some
research, interview other experts out there, and compile
the info - but if you love the topic you'll have a great
time in the process.
...And
that's what we're REALLY after anyway, isn't it? Being
able to make a lot of money while doing what we love.
To
sum it up: Pick a group of people that you love to
be associated with. Make sure it's easy to identify and
reach them online. And make sure they have money and are
willing to pay for solutions.
Get
all these steps right and the rest becomes easy.
